The Measurement Kit

Custom footwear begins with the perfect fit.

Every pair we make is cut and stitched by hand from your own measurements — never a stock size. The kit is how your feet reach our bench, exactly as they are.

01 — Why fit matters

Your feet are not a size. They’re a shape.

Off-the-shelf sizing forces thousands of different feet into a handful of moulds. A handmade shoe deserves better — it should begin from the one pair of feet it will spend its life on.

Left never equals right

Most people have two measurably different feet. We measure both and build a dedicated pattern for each, so neither is compromised.

Arches carry the fit

A high or low arch changes where a shoe flexes and holds. Get the arch wrong and nothing else lines up.

Instep is the hidden variable

The rise across the top of the foot decides whether a shoe slips or grips. It’s invisible to length-and-width sizing.

Width is not one number

Ball, waist and heel each have their own width. We record them separately instead of averaging them away.

Girth over silhouette

Circumference around the ball of the foot tells us volume — the difference between a shoe that clamps and one that cradles.

Handmade deserves precision

Days of hand-cutting and stitching go into one pair. Millimetre-accurate measurements make sure that work lands where it should.

TRANSCRIPT

Start on a hard floor with a sheet of paper against a wall. Stand tall, weight even, and let a second person trace — it’s far more accurate than doing it alone. Hold the pencil upright against the foot as you go. Trace the left, then the right; they will not match, and that’s exactly the point. Next, take the ball girth: run the tape around the widest part of the foot, snug but never tight. Note the instep where the laces will sit, then the heel and the ankle. Write each figure on the record sheet as you take it, in millimetres. Photograph the sheet before you send it — that’s your backup, and ours for every future pair.

05 — The seven measurements

What we ask for, and how to get it right.

Each measurement earns its place. Here’s what it captures, the trick to taking it well, and the mistake to avoid.

06 — Our bench

What “custom” actually means here.

A pattern of your own

Your measurements become a paper pattern kept under your name — the foundation of every pair you order from us.

No stock lasts

We don’t pull a standard last off a shelf. Yours is shaped to your figures and shelved for your next order.

Hand-cut leather

Every panel is cut by hand from full hides, so the grain and stretch are chosen for where they sit on your foot.

An individual fitting

Where a first pair calls for it, we make a fitting shoe and adjust before cutting your final leather.

Made by named artisans

One maker sees your pair from cut to finish. Their initials go inside the shoe.

Built to last decades

Stitched, not glued, and fully resoleable. These are shoes you repair, not replace.

07 — The hides

Choose the leather for the life you’ll give it.

Five leathers, each with its own character. We’ll recommend one for how and where you’ll wear the pair.

08 — Make it yours

Once the fit is right, the details are open.

Every pair is specified to order. Mix and match — or let us guide the combination.
